F1’s Speed Prompts Pirelli’s New Durable Tires
Formula 1 has been taken by surprise as the speed of the cars in the first quarter of the 2023 season has exceeded expectations. Pirelli, the official tire manufacturer for F1, has recognised the need for more durable tires to cope with the impressive performance on the track. Consequently, they have announced their plan to introduce new slicks at Silverstone to keep up with the heightened pace.
Unforeseen Speed Surprises Officials – F1’s Speed Prompts Pirelli’s New Durable Tires
As per reports from Racer, authorities had expected slower cars this season due to ride height regulations intended to decrease downforce by raising the ground effect machines’ floor above the track surface. However, this expectation has been shattered as the cars continue to demonstrate remarkable speed. Sergio Perez’s pole lap at the Miami Grand Prix, in particular, surprised Pirelli, clocking in two seconds faster than last year.
The forthcoming tires are designed to provide enhanced consistency and performance at higher loads, without necessarily increasing the overall speed of the cars. Interestingly, many of the materials incorporated in these new tires were originally developed for the anticipated higher performance of the 2024 season. As a result, the tire compounds are relatively mature and well-tested.
Teams will be provided with two additional sets of these new tires during the free practice sessions leading up to the Spanish Grand Prix. This will allow drivers to familiarize themselves with the characteristics and handling of the fresh rubber. It’s important to note that the arrival of these new tires for races is still a few grands prix away, so any significant changes in car behavior or driver performance are not expected immediately.
Excitement looms as Formula 1 embraces the prospect of enhanced durability and performance from the upcoming tires. Fans and teams eagerly anticipate witnessing the impact of these tire innovations in the weeks to come, as the racing action continues to unfold on the world’s most prestigious circuits.
